Want to own a Porsche 919 Hybrid?

As a trio of Porsche 919 Hybrids will be lining up on the grid in this weekend's 24 Hours of Le Mans, you will have the opportunity to own your very own 919 Hybrid... well a life-sized replica at least! Porsche's Asia Pacific divisions will auction off the replica to help raise funds for SportCares, a charity organization that aims to help those with disabilities.

As you may be aware, we have to kiwis driving the actual functioning race cars in the race. Both Earl Bamber and Brendon Hartley will be behind their own separate 919 Hybrids, as both competing racers and team-mates.

Porsche built 13 of the replica 919 Hybrids during the race car’s development days. Such replicas or mock-ups as they are otherwise known, serve as important development bucks that the engineers use for studies. The replicas are also used for display purposes, and very rarely do they ever end up in public hands.

The auction is open to buyers worldwide, with bids to be made via an eBay listing. The auction starts today and will end on Sunday, June 14—the final day of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. More details on the auction can be found at the website www.919hybridauction.com. 

The 919 Hybrid made its competition debut last year, marking Porsche’s return to top-level endurance racing by running in the LMP1 category of the World Endurance Championship, which includes the Le Mans race. The 919 Hybrid only managed to finish 11th overall at Le Mans in 2014, so for 2015 the engineers have worked hard to boost its performance, making the car more efficient, more rigid, easier to handle, lighter and more robust.

A red 919 Hybrid bearing the number 17 will be driven at Le Mans this weekend by Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber. At the wheel of the black number 18 car will be Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb. The white number 19 car will be shared by Earl Bamber, Nico Hülkenberg and Nick Tandy.
